Why the Hotel Bathtub is the Safest Spot to Put Your Luggage

When settling into a hotel room, your first instinct might be to place your luggage on the bed or a nearby rack. However, an unconventional yet effective strategy suggests placing your bags in the bathroom, specifically the bathtub, to protect against unwanted pests.

Bed bugs are notorious for infesting even the most upscale hotels. These tiny hitchhikers can latch onto your luggage, making their way into your home. Travel consultant Marla Cimini emphasizes the importance of inspecting hotel beds by pulling back sheets and examining mattresses, headboards, and drawers for any signs of these pests.

Entomologist Katelyn Kesheimer explains that bathrooms, with their hard, nonporous surfaces like tile and ceramics, are less likely to harbor bed bugs. Guests spend minimal time in these areas, and items like towels and bathmats are regularly cleaned, making the bathtub an ideal spot to keep your luggage safe.

Bed bugs prefer areas where people rest for extended periods, such as beds, couches, and chairs. They often hide in crevices of mattresses, behind headboards, within furniture, and even in closets and dressers. By placing your luggage in the bathtub, you minimize the risk of these pests accessing your belongings.

Before unpacking, use your phone’s flashlight to inspect your luggage, focusing on folds, zippers, and tags. Carrying large garbage bags can be beneficial; if you suspect an infestation, seal your luggage in these bags to prevent further spread until you can address the issue at home. Upon returning, unpack promptly and subject your belongings to high heat, as bed bugs cannot survive temperatures above 120°F (49°C).

While it may seem unusual, placing your luggage in the hotel bathtub is a simple and effective strategy to protect against bed bugs. By taking this precaution and remaining vigilant, you can ensure a safer and more comfortable travel experience.
